Lionel is, in all aspects, normally regarded as gloomy and timid by others. These things are pretty true of him, as he's quite the coward, doing his best to avoid others and not be forced to speak, and usually has some kind of depressing air about him. He's a bit of a downer sometimes, although he's not a mean or bad cat by any standard: he's actually a pretty nice guy if you've talked to him very much!

He stutters a lot and doesn't like talking, and tries to stay out of crowded areas. Lionel has a bad habit of crying in the smallest of situations and is very overly sensitive. He's also bashful and gets flustered rather easily, and the smallest of compliments could potentially put him into a babbling, reddened state. Despite appearances, though, he's quite the romantic deep down, and has a bit of a knack for poetry or prose. It's too bad he's not the least bit charming in person, but at least he can write a hell of a love note.

Due to some bad experiences in the past, Lionel is VERY protective of his friends and his greatest fear is that something could happen to them (as cliche as that sounds). He's very touchy about the subject of death or blood and refuses to talk about either unless you're very very very close to him, but even then it'll only be if he needs to vent something very badly. Lionel can be pretty skeptical about new people and is usually very defensive during the first encounter, and can sometimes even come off as aggressive if you give him some bad vibes (not that he's intimidating. ever. at all).

Despite his flaws, though, Lionel is very hard-working and faithful. He tries hard in everything he does, and while he isn't necessarily stubborn in his beliefs he puts all of his faith in cats who he believes in. He dislikes fights and conflict and does his best not to initiate any and keep the peace, even though his job is technically to fight people all the time. He's surprisingly strong as well despite his timid nature and dainty physique, and can even somehow keep up with most of the other elites in regards to physical prowess. He's also really good with kits for some reason? They probably think he's cute.

Backstory:

---Aura Isle---

Lionel originates from a tiny island that wasn't too far from the original Pokè-Paw Island, named Aura Isle by the residents, mainly Riolu and Lucario pokecats. The island had a matrilineal society and a special hierarchy: there were four she-cats governing the island, and while other cats could have mates, the four were the only ones allowed to have kits. They had a litter every two years, and chose which of the males they each wanted to mate with. The only catch was that if one of these four had a single kit that was smaller, weaker or deformed then the she-cat would be cast out and the kit would be culled, because the cats of the island strongly believed that strength was power, and any large sign of weakness was a stain on society.

Lionel was born in a litter of four to the third she-cat who was governing, and to her dismay when she looked over her kits she found that Lionel was much smaller than the others. A runt. Fearing for her son's life and wanting to stay in power, she told the other she that she trusted the most and they worked together to keep Lionel hidden. They managed to keep this up for a long time, with Lionel staying in a burrowing the ground and his mother coming at night to teach him how to hunt, speak and other things about the land.

It was only when one of Lionel's brothers went looking for his mother at night and found her with her fourth kit was Lionel finally exposed. Lionel's brother woke up the whole primitive town and the governing she's decided to give them one more day, blocking all entrances so escape was not possible, and to rip off the pelts of the mother and son if they attempted to leave. Lionel's mother was a determined cat, however, and she wouldn't give up on her son no matter what. Meanwhile it seemed as if a storm was rolling in from a while away-unbeknownst to them this was the destruction of Pokè-Paw Island taking place.

Near dusk that day Lionel and Hs mother made one dash for the entrance of the primitive town, only to be blocked by guards. In her desperation Lionel's mother did her best to stun them for as long as possible and while she effectively protected her son she came out with a few scrapes and bruises, as well as some guards going after her. That's when the small earthquakes started: so powerful that they rolled in from the neighbouring island. A few drops of magma started raining, and the downpour of them was a bit more severe by the time the cats had arrived at a beach. Thankfully the guards were a while behind them, and a floatzel cat was fleeing his usual home of the island shores. Lionel's mother saw to it that this cat would take her son to the nearest island, and after a teary goodbye she sent him on his way-just as the guards caught up. Assured her son would be fine, the former governor fought as valiantly as she could before getting overpowered and defeated. As the guards walked away, Lionel's mother closed her eyes and gave herself to the sea.

---Ciarwood Island: Trainer Days---

The floatzel dropped Lionel off at the beach of Ciarwood Island before swimming off in hopes of discovering a new land. Lionel, scared and alone, set off to start a new life. Soon night came and Lionel found a patch of trees to rest in, though he got no rest that night. It had been nearly a day and a half since his flight from his homeland, a few hours since he got back on dry land, and for the first time ever, he felt truly alone. Despite living in hiding for many years, he had never felt alone: his mother was always near him, even if she wasn't next to him. He was alone... And scared. He began to cry a bit, but told him to suck it up, though that proved difficult.

Eventually a certain woobat wandered by on the way to the Ranger's station, and noticed Lionel. She took him back for the night before taking him around town and telling him about Ciarwood's geography. They passed the training grounds that the trainers used, and Lionel watched them train for a while, fascinated by the movements of the two cats. He suddenly decided that he wanted to be that strong and skilled; and though he wouldn't see them ever again he wanted to prove everyone at Aura Isle wrong, and show them that even if he wasn't as big as them, that he could be strong, too, and he decided to be a trainer.

---Cianwood Island: Elite Four Days---

Soon, refugees from Kalos came to the island. They were tricked by Ace into going to war with the Cianwood cats. During the fray, Lionel lost his friend Nikki, which made him spiral into a depression. Another "friend" discovered this and came to Lionel's aid, treating him as a brother. Lionel was shocked, because this cat was none other than Asara, a drifloon who loved to mess with him and make him angry. Eventually Asara convinced him to stop wallowing in his sadness and make a comeback into Cianwood. Lionel, moved by his former enemy's sudden change of heart, started training more and more. He would get stronger... for his mother, and for Nikki and her kits. Soon he rose to Elite Four status and had finally proved to himself that he was strong enough.

Druid- "Druid practically saved my life- I almost drowned one day because of some stupid basculin (darn thing hurt my paw, too) and he jumped in to rescue me, so I owe him a favor for sure. He's a really nice cat, too, maybe a bit awkward, but he does mean well."

~~Nikki:~~ "I... I can't believe she's really g-g-gone... Sh-She was too strong to die. She had a mate, and kits... I hope they're ok..."

Aire- "She practically saved my life from some thief trying to take my collar! She's super strong and kind, and I really look up to her in that regard!"

~~Farah:~~ "She's dead! She's dead! I loved her, and now she's dead! I n-never even got a ch-chance to say goodbye, or even tell her how much I... dear Arceus, this can't be true..."

Asara- "That guy is a vain, obnoxious asshole... and he's like a brother to me. It's weird, but he's really helped me out. It's almost like the war has humbled him."

Silvia: "She's really nice and the best baker in town. I met her in a bakery in town one day and now I guess I work there in my free time sometimes??"

Sparx: "Nikki's k-k-kit. He's s-s-super shy, b-but I hope we c-can be friends!"

-Aura Sense: Lionel can feel the emotions of others by receiving waves of energy from liing things by turning on "aura sense." He doesn't like using it and tries to avoid this skill, but because of that it is rather weak and can only get a small sense of the other person's feelings.
