Born with a rare birth defect that caused her to have only one tail, Tsu'ai's family was very religious and thought that this was because of a demon hiding in her. This was not true, but they cast her out regardless and she was raised by her aunt and uncle until she was about 17 when she went out on her own.

In order to make money she became a dancer and performed for passersbys on the streets. She was well-liked and was eventually asked to perform in taverns and occasionally shows, and was regarded as one of the best dancers in Chon'sin.

When Valm decided to extend it's rule and take over, Tsu'ai managed to flee to Ylisse on a fisherman's boat. Although she was initially pursued by a band of Yen'fay's soldiers, they [wisely] decided not to chase her for much longer since they didn't wish for Ylisse to take notice, wanting to take them by surprise as soon as they had assimilated the rest of Valm. 

Tsu'ai eventually came upon the Shepherds when she was caught up in a fight with the Risen. Although she had a sword, the Risen soldiers managed to overpower her and was rescued by a lopunny named Callio. In return for his good deed, she joined the Shepherds, hoping that someday they would be able to fight the likes of Valm so that she might return home.
